How to Rewire Life: From Cruise Control to Full Control
Steering Life’s Direction
Breaking the Decade-Long Loop
Ever felt like your life is stuck on a loop, replaying the same patterns over and over? I certainly did. My 20s to early 30s felt like a continuous loop of partying, drinking, and people-pleasing. It was like being in a TikTok dance trend - repetitive and lacking substance. But then, like in the movie "10 Years" where Channing Tatum and friends confront their true selves at a High school reunion, I faced my reality in a parallel state.
The Wake-Up Call: A Decade on Pause
My 'stop-drop-and rollll..' moment came at 30, stuck between the turmoil of military life pulling me back, and civilian life blindfolding me– forcing me to play the guessing game of life.. It was time to pause and rethink. What did I want the next decade to look like? Was I going to continue living life on repeat, or was it time to grab the steering wheel?
What is Neuroplasticity: It's like the brain's ability to hit the gym and get stronger. Just like muscles grow with exercise, your brain changes and adapts when you learn new things. Neuroplasticity means your brain can form new connections and pathways when you gain new experiences, learn skills, or even recover from injuries. It's the brain's way of staying flexible and adaptable throughout your life. I had to figure out how to go from unmotivated, to self motivated.
What is Neurogenesis: This is the process of your brain actually creating new brain cells, like planting seeds in a garden that grows into new plants. Even as an adult, your brain can grow these new cells, which help in learning and memory. It's like your brain constantly refreshing itself, ensuring it's always ready to take on new challenges and store new memories.
Combining these two is like peanut butter and jelly. The perfect combo!
Taking Back Control: The Brain's Elasticity
Our brain, a marvel of nature, isn't just a mass of cells but a dynamic organ capable of incredible masterpieces through neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. These are the unsung heroes in our journey of self-discovery and growth. I had to learn and relearn how my brain operated, how to break away from negative thoughts and emotions.
Neuroplasticity: The Brain's Flexibility
Imagine your brain like a network of roads, with neuroplasticity being the process of building new highways or improving old ones. This flexibility allows us to learn, adapt, and even recover from injuries. Here's a cool exercise, or thought experiment we can do real quick, I want you to imagine leaving your house and driving to your local market but heres the catch–you have to take a route you’ve never taken before. Go! This forces your brain to dip into that peanut butter and jelly mentality and utilize neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. Similar to using opposite hands to brush your teeth in the morning.
Neurogenesis: Growing New Brain Cells
Neurogenesis, on the other hand, is like our brain's regeneration power, constantly creating new cells, even into adulthood. It’s our mind’s way of ensuring we never stop growing.
My Journey of Rewiring
Post-military, I faced a choice: revert to my old ways or forge a new path. I chose the latter, determined to understand the 'whys' of my life and inspire others to step out of conformity. That's how Mogressive Coaching was born - a testament to my journey of relearning, rewiring, and retraining my brain. For optimal output and performance in every category of my life.
Embracing Neuroplasticity and Neurogenesis
I dived into understanding my brain through the lens of neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. Just like stretching a rubber band, I learned to stretch my brain's capabilities, enhancing memory, focus, and overall health. I started creating a new foundation not only for my thinking but for my way of life.
