Waltzon’s Law: Why a Good Plan Today Beats a Perfect Plan Tomorrow (Progress Over Perfection)

Are You Stuck

Waiting for the “Perfect” Plan?

Why Taking Action Today Beats Waiting for Perfection

Have you ever been so focused on getting everything just right that you never actually started? Maybe it was a project at work, a fitness goal, or a personal dream. You kept thinking, "I’ll start when I have all the details figured out," but that day never came. Sound familiar?

Enter Waltzon’s Law: "A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow."

This simple principle is a game-changer. It’s not about settling for less; it’s about taking action and improving as you go. Life rewards those who move forward, even with imperfect steps.

What Is Waltzon’s Law?

Waltzon’s Law emphasizes the power of momentum. It’s a reminder that progress beats perfection. Waiting for the perfect conditions or flawless plans often leads to procrastination and missed opportunities. On the other hand, a good plan—even if it’s not perfect—can create the action needed to refine and grow.

This principle is especially valuable for:

  • Veterans transitioning to civilian life, who might hesitate to apply for jobs or start businesses, fearing they aren’t fully prepared.

  • College students, who delay assignments or projects because they’re stuck aiming for perfection.

  • Adults seeking self-growth, who often avoid taking the first step toward their goals because they feel it’s not the “right” time.

Real-Life Examples of Waltzon’s Law in Action

1. Launching a New Career

Imagine you’re a veteran transitioning to a civilian career. You’ve done the training, but you’re waiting to feel 100% ready before applying for jobs. Meanwhile, opportunities pass you by. Taking action today even with a less-than-perfect plan can open doors to feedback, interviews, and growth.

Did You Know? According to a LinkedIn Workforce Report, job seekers who apply early, even if they don’t meet all qualifications, are 35% more likely to land interviews than those who wait. Source

2. Tackling School Projects

A college student has a research paper due but keeps postponing because they want the “perfect” thesis. Instead of making progress, they’re stuck in analysis paralysis. Writing a rough draft—even if it’s messy—can spark ideas and create the way for revisions.

3. Personal Growth Goals

Adults seeking to improve their health might delay starting a fitness routine because they don’t have the “right” equipment or a perfectly balanced diet plan. But going for a walk today or choosing one healthy meal is a great start that builds momentum.

How to Apply Waltzon’s Law to Your Life

1. Start Where You Are

Don’t wait for all the pieces to fall into place. Ask yourself, “What’s one step I can take today?” Even small actions can lead to big results over time. When I first started college after the military, I didn’t know what to expect. I was full of mental limitations and anxieties, but I kept reminding myself, “just take the first step” I kept reminding myself to trust myself and the process. It was difficult, but it was also the greatest step forward I made for myself at the time.

2. Embrace Imperfection

Perfection is a myth. Progress happens when you take action and improve as you go. Accept that your first attempt won’t be flawless—and that’s okay. Starting Mogressive Coaching, I didn’t know what to expect or where to start, I just knew I needed to start. Focus on one thing at a time and don’t move on until you have at least started and finished one complete action.

3. Reflect and Adjust

Action creates clarity. Once you start, you’ll learn what works and what doesn’t. Use those insights to refine your plan along the way. If you look back at these blogs from the very beginning, I had no idea about format, seo, structure, niche..I just wrote what was on my mind and started there. Now, I can go back and edit/update those blogs with the experience and skills i’ve learned since them and sprinkle some love over those to boost those blogs and ranking.
